Mari-Ann Weeks

Mari-Ann Weeks
October 1929 - July 2026

We are saddened to announce the passing of Mari-Ann Weeks, at Victoria General Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in July 2026.

She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Dr. John Weeks, in 2006. She was also predeceased by her daughter Annika, in 2022.

She is survived by her four loving children and their spouses: Kristin (Bill), Andy (Ila), Bess (Brad), Bjorn (Francisca); along with 7 grandchildren (Vivian, Peter, Nichole, Caleb, Carl, Diane and Leigh); and 5 great-grandchildren (Christen, Avaira, Arlo, Walter, and Alyvia).

Mari-Ann was just 3 months shy of her 97th birthday. She was very spry until recently and had a sharp mind right up until the time of her passing.

Mari-Ann was born in Malmö, Sweden, in 1929. In her early 20s, she moved to live in London, England, to work and learn English. She met John through mutual friends.  He wanted to learn Swedish...as the story goes... and she wanted to learn English. They fell in love and were married in 1952. John finished medical school in London, and after he worked as a physician there for a short time, Mari-Ann and John moved the family to Canada in 1958.

They started their new lives in Newfoundland, but eventually found a beautiful new community built along the banks of the Winnipeg River in Manitoba.  It was called Pinawa, and they moved the family there in 1963.  They spent most of their lives there, raising a growing family and enjoying the new town and the natural beauty of their surroundings.

As well as raising 5 children, Mari-Ann was involved with helping to start a much-needed public library in Pinawa in the early stages of the town's development.

In later years, she was an excellent grandmother, well-loved by 7grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.

Mari-Ann was known for her love of beautiful things, and her carefully decorated home reflected her own special sense of style.  She also had a great love for cats.  John used to say that they always seemed to appear and follow her when they went out walking – so apparently, they loved her too!  And of course, she was a wonderful baker and cook. Family memories are sure to include Mari-Ann making things from scratch in the kitchen. Everything she made seemed special – from everyday breakfasts and smorgasbords to unusual homemade treats made for special occasions and guests.

A few years after John passed away, Mari-Ann moved to Winnipeg to be closer to family.  She spent the next 14 years of her life there.

At Mari-Ann’s request, there will be no formal funeral. A family gathering is anticipated at a later date.

Her remains have been cremated.

The family extends special thanks to the nursing staff at Victoria General Hospital for their care of Mari-Ann during her final weeks.
